Types of leather

LITTLE ABOUT LEATHER...

Processed leather can take many forms.

It is divided according to:

  • the animal which it comes from (pigskin, cowhide, goatskin, etc.)
  • processing technology (vegetable-tanned, mineral tanned, etc.)
  • ways of dividing the leather (whole leather, halves, croupons and half - croupons, etc.)
  • surface treatments (natural, pigmented, velor, nubuck, etc.)

TYPES OF LEATHER

Cowhide splits

Cowhide split is the lower layer of skin, which is created by cutting off the front layer. The surface is rough, as if suede. It is suitable for the production of insoles. It can also be used to make heel reinforcements, etc. We offer a tannin split.

The whole piece is usually around 80 - 120 dm2 (croupon) or the whole piece up to about 220 dm². You can write a the note what approximate size would suit you the best (eg 10x50 cm or 30x20 cm), we will try to find a piece most similar to your requirement.

Please keep in mind that the skin may have minor defects in beauty such as pressure from the pin, small wrinkles or a hole. This is not a reason for a complaint. Also take into account that the skin is not an even shape.

Pigskin splits

Thin lined pigskin, which is suitable for lining the front of the skin, or as a fine reinforcement. It can also be used on insoles. Unlike cowhide splits, it is soft and pliable.

The size of the whole piece is 30-120 dm².

We offer velor ("suede" on both sides) or ironed, which is ironed on one side = smooth, stronger. The ironed pigskin split is suitable for reinforcements, it is thin and firm and stiffer at the same time. The velour un-ironed split behaves more like a textile fabric. It is very soft and pleasant to the touch. It absorbs sweat well.

Front porkskin

Front porkskin is used for various covers of books, diaries but also as a lining.

Non-rolled cowhide

Top layer of leather, tanned. It is suitable for the production of strap sandals, but also for insoles. It can also be used for the production of moccasins. It is stiffer than the rolled cowhide.

I offer in addition to the classic size (halves) in edges. The edges are about 15 - 30 cm wide, exceptionally up to about 60 cm. They tend to be of various shapes. Straight edges and right angles are almost non-existent, so order with more reserve. There can also be more defects on them, most often wrinkles.

You can buy the whole half for a discounted price - watch the menu. It tends to be around 160 - 240 dm². We give a discount of 1 to 2 CZK for whole halves - depending on the size of the skin. You can write a note what approximate size would suit you the best (eg 10x50 cm or 30x20 cm), we will try to find a piece most similar to your request, or we will contact you via e-mail and let you know what the options are.

Please keep in mind that the leather may have minor defects in beauty such as pressure from the pin, small wrinkles or a hole. This is not a reason for a complaint.

Rolled cowhide

Top layer of leather, tanned, softened by rolling. It is suitable for the production of ballerinas and moccasins.

The thinner the leather, the more supple it is.

The leather is rolled mechanically, it can be less softened at the edges and it can also be slightly wrinkled. I have a rolled cowhide from various tanneries and you can buy it more or less rolled. Less rolled, it is stiffer and less flexible, it holds its shape well. The more rolled the more supple, softer it is.

Suitable for children's shoes or ballerinas. It can have a "wrinkles" from rolling.

We give a discount of 1 to 2 CZK / dm2 for whole halves - depending on the size of the leather. Half is around 160 - 240 dm². You can write in the note what approximate size would suit you (eg 10x50 cm or 30x20 cm), we will try to find a piece most similar to your request or we will contact you via e-mail and let you know what the options are.

Please keep in mind that the leather may have small defects in beauty such as pressure from the pin, small wrinkles or a hole. The edges can be less rolled than the croup. This is not a reason for a complaint.

Nubuck

Nubuck refers to a quality leather that has been tanned and treated in a specific way with mineral salts and finished by fine grinding on the front side. This makes the nubuck very strong, flexible and durable. It is also very light and breathable. Thanks to fine grinding, nubuck has a velvety soft surface. In addition, this grinding improves the ability to absorb and transmit moisture. Over time, nubuck leathers acquire a natural patina. Nubuck is resistant to wear and tear, but more prone to dirt. In case of soaking, it is important to let it dry thoroughly. In case of dirt, we recommend polishing the material with a damp cloth with gentle circular movements. The scratched nubuck can be reground with a special nubuck sponge. Due to its good absorbency, it is good to treat nubuck with a special protective spray.

Velor

Split velor is leather grounded on both sides. It is characterized by a velvety surface to the touch, a fine evenly "hairy" surface.

Genuine velor is leather cut on the revers side.

Crazy horse, pull up

A specific type of leather with a higher percentage of fat and wax, which leaves changing traces of normal use and thus acquires a unique patina.

Dyed nappa leather

It is a soft and supple, mineral-tanned leather. Especially suitable for sewing on a machine (even an ordinary sewing machine can handle it). Children's shoes and slippers are most often sewn from it. However, it is also possible to sew ballerinas and moccasins from it - for this it is suitable to strengthen it with lining or even the heel and the reinforcement of the toe. For reinforcement, the leather can be lined with, for example, uncolored pigskin lining. For reinforcements, for example, ironed pigskin or 1 mm cowhide splits are suitable.

You can write us a note what approximate size would suit you (eg 10x50 cm or 30x20 cm), we will try to find a piece most similar to your request or we will contact you via e-mail and let you know what the options are.

Keep in mind that the leather may have minor defects in beauty such as pressure from the pin, small wrinkles or a hole. This is not a reason for a complaint. If the leather is wrinkled, it can be ironed from the reverse side using low temperature.

Goatskin

Quality leather from domestic goats. Excels in softness, ductility and at the same time high tensile strength. It is used for gloves, clothing, wallets. Also suitable for fine children's shoes, with lining for other shoes. We also have real goatskin velor. Goatskins are in TOP quality, usually without any defects in beauty and without pointed edges. It is usually only the highest quality middle part - so you can use the whole piece without any residue.
